Start making your list and checking it twice (and three times, and maybe a fourth) – it's officially Hottest 100 season!
That's right, the big musical democracy is back for 2023 so it's time to crack out your diary, calendar and group chats and get yourself ready to vote for your favourite songs of the year.
If this is your first time (welcome!) or you need a refresher on what the Hottest 100 is all about, let's go through the nitty gritty of the whole thing.
What is the Hottest 100?
It's triple j's annual poll of all *your* favourite songs of the year that was!
Every year, you and hundreds of thousands of other legends choose that soundtracked your life over the last 12 months. All you need to do is select up to 10 songs you've loved, submit them into the Hottest 100 website and then tune in on Saturday 27 January from 10am, when we count them all down from 100 to 1.
It's a summer tradition! Gather a bunch of mates, turn the tunes right up and fight over what should have been higher.
Then the next day we'll be back again to count down from 200 to 101, recognising all the legends who we loved just as much.
Not enough number-based excitement for you? You're in luck because the following weekend, Double J will be throwing it back 20 years and revisiting the Hottest 100 of 2003!
Here's all the important countdown details:
- triple j's Hottest 100 countdown - 12pm, Saturday 27 January
- triple j's Hottest 200 countdown - 10am, Sunday 28 January
- Double J's Hottest 100 of 2003 -10am, Saturday 3 February
How does voting work? When can I do that??
Voting officially opens on Tuesday 12 December at 8am AEDT and you'll have until 5pm on Monday 22 January to get your selections signed, sealed and delivered.
So how do you vote? We're so glad you asked.
Head over to the triple j website (where you're reading this right now) or the triple j app and follow the signs to the Hottest 100 voting page.
There, you'll be able to scroll through *heaps* of songs released over the last year to fill up your list. If one of your faves isn't there, you can submit your own nominations manually, too! Just make sure the song was released between December 1 2022 and November 30, 2023.
You can vote for *up to* 10 songs with your shortlist. Only have three bangers that bopped your socks? That's ok! Maybe there's only one (1) heater that stole your heart? Fine by us!
If you're anything like the triple j team you might end up with 48 songs that you vibed to this year, which means you'll have to do the hard yards and trim it down to just 10 songs. We suggest getting in early, making a playlist and using all the time you can to really whittle that list down.
You'll have until 5pm AEDT (Sydney/Melbourne time) on Monday 22 January to get those precious votes in. REMEMBER THAT. Pin it on your wall. Set yourself a reminder on your phone. Write that down on a sticky note and chuck it on your forehead if you have to.
